As a first-time bun mum, I was on a mission to learn as much as I could about how to take proper care of my Hazel, who came to us after becoming an unwanted Easter bunny. I found Jen through her website, which has the most extensive collection of rabbit resources in New Zealand. I reached out to Jen to ask for post-op guidance in preparation for Hazel's upcoming spay, and learned that Jen offers medical boarding. This is a comprehensive service which covers everything from Jen coordinating with her rabbit-savvy vet (the awesome Dr. Gabe!) to bringing Hazel back to her "hospital" room and taking extremely conscientious care of Hazel for 3 nights after her procedure.
I am beyond relieved that Jen offers this service, as I was highly stressed out by all the risks a female bunny faces after getting spayed. The thought of possibly having to force feed Hazel, wrestling to get medication down her throat, and/or dealing with stitches that she may pull out--it was all so daunting! Knowing that Hazel would be well looked after by Jen, who has over 30 years of experience with rabbits, immediately erased all my stress and paranoia.
Jen is a treasure trove of rabbit knowledge--there wasn't a single question I asked that she didn't know the answer to (and I peppered her with questions for 3 full days!) Jen and her hubby Chris (a rabbit expert in his own right) were such a pleasure to hang out with (yes, they let me hang out with them so I could be with Hazel during her recovery!) If I lived in Hamilton, I would hang out with them all the time, if they'd let me. They are just the nicest and most generous people, and their love for rabbits is so wonderful to experience.
During my visits, I toured the boarding facilities and saw first-hand how happy all her rabbit guests were in their clean and spacious enclosures, with toys, ramps, and the greatest amount of green hay I've ever seen in my life. A few guests were taking part in Bunny Boot Camp, and though they were getting healthier and losing weight, none of them were anything less than happy, active rabbits! Jen has a large garden full of rabbit-friendly weeds and plants, so all her guests benefit from eating the freshest greens during their stay (in addition to the sweetest-smelling Timothy hay that she generously provides every day).
Hazel's recovery was so quick, with absolutely no issues for me to fret over. This is a testament to Jen's vet's surgical skills, but also to Jen's fastidious attention and care for Hazel. Jen even knew exactly what type of soft toy Hazel would love! I enthusiastically recommend Jen if your rabbit needs medical boarding (or boarding, in general) and am so glad I found her--I will not hesitate to drive from Taupo to Hamilton to board Hazel again with Auntie Jen, Hazel was really fond of her and gave her lots of licks before we left for home.
On a side note: I observed Jen's excellent grooming skills during Hazel's stay, and her rabbit clients' before and afters were mind blowing! She treated each rabbit with such gentleness and patience, and I could clearly see how happy and free the rabbits felt after their grooming session (some had really thick mats that limited their movements, but there wasn't any mat too thick or large for Jen to handle!) Jen's Facebook page shows some of her grooming clients, in case you'd like to see some before and afters.
Last side note: Jen has an online shop that sells so many great things that it's really hard to choose what to get! From seeds to toys to medical supplies, Jen's got your rabbit needs covered. If you're picking up your rabbit from boarding or grooming, you can get them directly from Jen, otherwise she is super fast in responding to online orders. I'm really excited to start my own rabbit garden this spring, as fresh is best!
