Dolly
AUCKLAND - Dolly; desexed, microchipped female mini lop. Born 06/12/24.
Dolly is a black mini lop; she is getting used to life without her husbun Mister who died suddenly in August 2024. Actually, she is thriving – Dolly and Mister had always lived a happy outdoor life together, but since she has been on her own, Dolly has moved inside with us and is becoming the most incredible house pet.
She is extremely well toilet trained – beyond my expectations in fact. She will nibble exposed cables and rattan rugs or laundry baskets. Since we have restricted access to these items, we haven’t had a single issue with her living inside with us – except… we have one member of the family who is non-negotiable on indoor pets, and I am not up for getting another rabbit and going through the re-bonding process in order to let her be outside again.
However, I’m sure Dolly could be re-bonded with a desexed male and happily live outside again. Equally, she will make an excellent house rabbit companion.
She does not like to be picked up (on the rare occasion I must do this, I put a small blanket over her body and make it as quick as possible). She will hop into her carry cage of her own volition if you need to take her somewhere, so this helps if she becomes an indoor/outdoor bunny who needs to be transported between locations – although she’ll also come running to the sound of pellets hitting her bowl!
She absolutely loves to be stroked – head and cheeks especially, please! Considering we’ve only had her indoors for a few weeks now, I wouldn’t be surprised if she gains even more confidence and trust in her humans. Despite having the run of the house (just about), she chooses to be near me during the day while I work, often binkying and zooming partway through the morning before flopping for a long midday nap, usually always within my eyeshot. We have gradually increased the areas of the house she has access to – she returns to ‘her’ room when she likes/needs to and otherwise seeks out human company or a sunny spot for a long nap (we do shut her in her room overnight though, or if we leave the house).
She’s a high-jumping, curious, and occasionally timid little bun full of personality. Given time and attention I think she will blossom more around people.
No known medical issues.
Likes: tossing toilet rolls around, hiding in cardboard boxes and modifying any holes cut into them, and having the space to explore and jump around in. Loves eating fresh plantain and a sprinkling of fresh herbs, especially thyme.
Dislikes: being picked up, being cornered.
Dolly can bring with her:
- 2x pet carry cages
- Various rag rugs/blankets/towels for snuggling and floor coverings if you want them
- 2x water/food bowls
- 2x litter trays
- Hay and pellets (Burgess mint); whatever quantity we have remaining – at the moment that’s about 7kg of a 10kg bag of pellets and 2x unopened boxes of the finest meadow hay from One Stop Bunny Shop, plus plastic storage tubs for each
- Wood pellets, if any remaining from current bag
- A hutch/snuggly box for a warm and safe place to retreat to inside a bigger outdoor run/setup! This has a corrugated roof/lid as has been outside. Painted ply; so is weather proof. Could easily be modified for wherever you want to use it. Approx 1m x1m.
- A sturdy little fold up table for sitting on and under, a small tarp
