Hot Cross

AUCKLAND: Hot Cross (Bun) - Female Netherland Dwarf x Mini Lop (most likely) Approx. 18 months old, Desexed, Microchipped and Vaccinated (Filavac 14/02/22)

Hot Cross is an approximately 18-month-old mini-lop cross that came into our lives just after Christmas 2021. Neighbours had seen her wandering around for several days before we found her, and she hadn’t been eating. We took her to the vet and looked after her, though all our efforts to find her original owner have hit a dead end – as far as we can tell, she had been dumped, and we’ve been taking care of her since.

Hot Cross is an indoor bunny, and probably has been for her entire life; she was already perfectly litter-trained when we found her, and we're not sure how she'd handle living outside. She is a shy bunny; she takes some time to warm up but happily shares space with a human quietly minding their own business once she gets to know them. She will eat from your hand and tolerate strokes once you've bonded with her a bit, will occasionally hop into the lap of her preferred human looking for treats, and will greedily beg from anybody that walks past once she's comfortable. She enjoys playing with her toys, reclining under the sofa, and evening zoomies around the living room carpet (she won’t walk on hardwood or any slippery floor). She is free-ranging in our living room with her own large pen where she can get away from the parrot, and would prefer a bunny-proof room to being in a hutch all day; she does like cables so we have used plastic barriers to protect the walls, which we can pass on to her new humans. While she’s been doing OK with us, she hasn’t been thriving - our parrot is fairly noisy and stresses her out, and she’d benefit from the social stimulation of another bunny. Because of this, we’ve decided to try and rehome her.

The ideal home would have no children, or children who understand that Hot Cross is not a cuddly toy and needs her space. She does not seem to get along well with birds, but we don't know about other animals. Previous or current rabbit owners preferred, particularly single bunnies she can bond with, but a new bunny owner willing to learn how to take care of her will be considered. She is extremely food motivated which makes grooming her much easier, but it does mean the new owner will have to understand portion control and not give in to her begging; she's also a bit cheeky and will sneak into the food box at every opportunity so it needs to be stored well out of reach, as she'll sample anything including parrot food. She comes with her litter box, litter, snuffle mat, hay ball, pellet ball, bed, toys, food, hay, treats, brush, and any of her other miscellaneous possessions, and we are happy to answer any questions you may have. She has been spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped, and microchip details can be changed to the new owner. We can also provide medical history from her current vet.
